The Hero and the Shaman: A Study of Mongolian Heroic Epic Silen Galzuu Baatar
Chen, Ganglong (China)
Silen Galzuu Baatar, is a short heroic epic of merely six to seven hundred lines, yet it is the most widespread epic among Mongolians. Besides, the history for collecting, sorting out, and studying it by scholars both at home and abroad has surpassed more than 100 years since 1908. It has also been twenty years as of 1994 since I have been studying Silen Galzuu Baatar. In 2000, I published the monograph called Mongolian Heroic Epic Silen Galzuu Baatar: Compilation and Comparative Study. It has been well received in the academia of Mongolia, and it was translated into Cyrillic Mongolian by Mongolian Academy of Science and published in Ulan Bator in 2006.
This lecture mainly explores the Mongolian Heroic Epic Silen Galzuu Baatar with the theory on Morphology of the Magic Folk Tale by Vladimir Propp. It is combined with the conflict between Shamanism and Buddhism during the early years when Khalkha Mongols accepted Tibetan Buddhism to interpret the Shaman heroic characters of Silen Galzuu Baatar who is the hero in the Epic, reputed as the "Furious Hero". Silen Galzuu Baatar is an "epic about recapturing the lost land" and saving the clan population from occupied enemy tribes. Meanwhile, it is also a Shaman story that a hero who travels in another world to save his clan members’ souls taken by the devil. Many Mongolian heroic epics have this dual character.
Silen Galzuu Baatar was the prototype for my research on "oral epics" for my literary work, On Stories of Manggus which has gained recognition for the First China Folklore Prize. Although the stories of Manggus could be sung consecutively for half a month or even several months, it is the result of the evolution and development of the short epic Silen Galzuu Baatar of only several hundred lines. That is the major significance of this lecture.
