Rethinking the Homeric Question in “the Quarrel between the Ancients and the Moderns”: Focusing on Vico

Huang, Qun (China)

With the development of the new sciences and new rational philosophy, a large scale trans-century debate which is known as “The quarrel between the ancients and modern” broke out in Europe from the late 17th century to early 18th century. Actually, the quarrel is a recurrent theme in the history of ideas. It was already being argued in the later days of the Roman Empire, but now it has been renewed and widened in this period. As an iconic cultural event, the quarrel just between the Renaissance and Enlightenment has a profound ideological significance. In 1687, a speech about diminishing Homer was given by Charles Perrault, an academician of the French academy light a fuse. In the following thirty years, many European intellectuals were split in two groups, namely "pro ancient group" and "pro modern group", concentrating on the "Homeric Question" and later the question of superiority between the knowledge of ancient times and that of modern times. There was a furious debate between the two sides which almost rocked the intelligentsia in all of Europe; it seemed to be about how to evaluate Homer, at least on the surface, yet it revealed the sharp conflict between the knowledge of new sciences and that of the Classical is the inner one. Therefore, by investigating how Giambattista Vico, a famous Italian philosopher, who was in “Ancients and Moderns”, provide the solution for the debate with "Homeric Questions" in New Science, how to reconcile different opinions from the two sides of ancient and modern, and how to open the modernity of the "Homeric Question," I will try to analyze the ins and outs of the question of “Ancients and Moderns.” Nevertheless, by means of close reading Vico’s works and rethinking the inner nature of “Ancients and Moderns,” we can find the urgent and great enlightening significant for reconsidering "the quarrel between China and western” of China’s modern cultural traditions, as well as the situation of ethnic epic traditions in modern times, and so on. Similarly, we must have a balance between the current and classical knowledge, which is our “common problems,” for not only Chinese scholars, but for all the humanity. As Levine said ten years ago, “The classics were largely abandoned in the schools and in public life where they had long reigned. The long quarrel between ancients and moderns was pretty much over.”(Levine, Joseph M.)
